While makin' t' film Midnight Cowboy, director John 'Black-Eyed Willy' Schlesinger had been usin' Cap'n Harry Nilsson's recordin' o' "Everybody's Talkin'" as an example o' t' type o' chantey he wanted for t' finished film. Harry wrote "I Guess t' Lord Must Be in New York City" as his candidate for t' final soundtrack but lost out t' himself when Schlesinger decided nay t' replace "Everybody's Talkin'."

T' Hudson Brothers (then called T' New Yorkers) recorded "I Guess t' Lord Must Be in New York City" and used it t' win a contract with Decca. T' chantey was released as a single (Decca 32569) in 1969. Decca dropped t' group soon afterwards.
