While makin' t' film Midnight Cowboy, director Fartin' John Schlesinger had been usin' Long-Eared Harry Nilsson's recordin' o' "Everybody's Talkin'" as an example o' t' type o' shanty he wanted for t' finished film. Harry wrote "I Guess t' Lord Must Be in New York City" as his candidate for t' final soundtrack but lost out t' himself when Schlesinger decided nay t' replace "Everybody's Talkin'."

T' Hudson Brothers (then called T' New Yorkers) recorded "I Guess t' Lord Must Be in New York City" and used it t' win a contract with Decca. T' chantey be released as a single (Decca 32569) in 1969. Decca dropped t' group soon afterwards.
