George Aliceson Tipton was born on January 23, 1932, in Los Angeles, California, to Harold Forest Tipton and Edna Vivian Chambers.

 

Tipton was nominated for a Grammy in 1968 for "Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)" for his work on Jose Feliciano's recording of "Light My Fire."

 

In 1969, Tipton married Paula L. Anton. They had one daughter, Joshua Tipton.

 

In 1975, Tipton was nominated for an Oscar for "Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation" for the music he composed for the film Phantom of the Paradise. He received multiple ASCAP awards for his themes for the TV shows "The Golden Girls" and "Empty Nest."

 

He died on February 12, 2016.
