Seeing Ron Sexsmith drinking a Brandy Alexander at a party, Leslie Feist asked about the drink. He told her the story of John Lennon's and Harry Nilsson's addiction to the drink during Lennon's "Lost Weekend."

Inspired by the story, Feist wrote the lyrics to "Brandy Alexander" which she emailed to Sexsmith who sat at a piano and composed the music for the song.[1]
