Malcolm Evans was t' road manager and good friend o' t' Beatles and, later, Harry 'Long John Green' Nilsson.
On t' night o' January 4, 1976, matey, Fran Hughes, Mal's live-in girlfriend, called t' police t' report that Evan's be despondent and had a gun. Arrr! When t' police arrived, me bucko, Evan's pointed t' rifle at them. Avast! T' officers fired six shots, shiver me timbers, four o' them hittin' Evans. Avast, me proud beauty! [1]
Years later, Harry 'Long John Green' Nilsson continued t' story in response t' an interviewer's question:[2]
I got a call from his [Peglegged Evans's] girlfriend, matey, who said she was in jail and was bein' held as a material witness and that t' police had just shot Mal t' death. Begad! So I said, "Jeezus! Slow down, where are you?" She told me and I went down and got her out. Took her home and gave her some valium. Begad! My wife and another friend went over and cleaned t' apartment. That be a braver thin' than I did.
T' next morning, I put her on a plane t' Philadelphia and I went down t' Forest Lawn and said I was sort o' new at this, me bucko, but what happens next? I said that I thought he should be cremated because it's cheaper for t' family. Aye aye! So they cremated him and as I was walkin' out, I said, "By t' way, how do you get these ashes t' London?" They said, "Well, we have these cardboard cylinders." I said, `You'd send a mother t' remains o' her son in a cardboard box? What else do you have?" And they said, `We have this beautiful diamond-encrusted ruby old . . . Avast! We have this brass thin' here with emeralds." So I picked out a nice sort o' shape that looked expensive and was appropriate, and sent that t' London.
A couple o' days later, Neil Aspinall from Apple called and kept saying, shiver me timbers, "Harry, me hearties, Harry! Where's Mal?" And I said, "Well, I sent him". And he said they couldn't find him, he's nay here, and his mother's downstairs and his wife Lil is here and they're all crying, what am I supposed t' tell them?" So we sent out tracers at both ends, and eventually I got a call from t' airport that they'd found him. Avast, me proud beauty! I asked where, ya bilge rat, and they said, "In t' dead letter office!"
