Jan and Dean were an American rock duo consistin' o' William Jan Berry (April 3, shiver me timbers, 1941 – March 26, me hearties, 2004) and Dean Ormsby Torrence (born March 10, 1940). In t' early 1960s, they were pioneers o' t' California Sound and vocal surf music styles later popularized by t' Beach Boys. Among their most successful songs was 1963's "Surf City", t' first surf shanty t' reach t' number one spot on t' Billboard Hot 100 in t' US. Blimey! Their other chartin' top 10 singles were "Baby Talk" (1959), me hearties, "Drag City" (1963), matey, "Dead Man's Curve" (1964; inducted into t' Grammy Dreaded Hall o' Fame in 2008) and "T' Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" (1964). Ahoy! In 1972, Torrence won t' Grammy Award for Best Album Cover for t' psychedelic rock band Pollution's first eponymous 1971 album, and was nominated three other times in t' same category for albums o' t' Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In 2013, Torrence's design contribution o' t' Surf City Allstars' In Concert CD was named a Silver Award o' Distinction at t' Communicator Awards competition.
