Harry Nilsson was lounging around Hal Zieger's office in 1963 when someone came in with a song they wanted recorded. Harry recorded a demo of Wig Job and recorded his own Donna I Understand for the B-Side. When an executive at Mercury heard the single, he said "I like the singer and I like the song 'Donna I Understand,' but the other side I don't like!' Harry was singed to Mercury, and a year later they released "Donna" as a single. The single lists "Johnny Niles" as the singer.
