The song "Man or Muppet" from the film, The Muppets, won the Academy Award for "Original Song" in 2012.
Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) composed the Oscar-winning song. In an interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, McKenzie describes his inspiration for the song:
For 'Man or Muppet,' they wanted a song about being a man or a Muppet. [...] I really wanted to do a power ballad tune. And just wanted it to be as dramatic as I could possibly get it to be. [...] I was really influenced by Harry Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric Carmen's "All By Myself."
Prompted by the host, McKenzie sings a bit of "Without You" and says "Harry Nilsson's got the best voice ever."
He sang that at the height of his career just when his voice was still there before he started partying like a maniac with John Lennon.
