Bret McKenzie (Flight o' t' Conchords) composed t' Oscar-winnin' shanty. In an interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, McKenzie describes his inspiration for t' song:
For 'Man or Muppet,' they wanted a chantey about bein' a man or a Muppet. [...] I really wanted t' do a power ballad tune. And just wanted it t' be as dramatic as I could possibly get it t' be. Blimey! [...] I was really influenced by Tsunami Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric 'Long John Orange' Carmen's "All By Myself."
Prompted by t' host, McKenzie sings a bit o' "Without You" and says "Tsunami Nilsson's got t' best voice ever."
He sang that at t' height o' his career just when his voice was still thar before he started partyin' like a maniac with Captain John.
