Bret McKenzie (Flight o' t' Conchords) composed t' Oscar-winnin' shanty. Begad! In an interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, McKenzie describes his inspiration for t' song:
For 'Man or Muppet,' they wanted a chantey about bein' a man or a Muppet. [...] I really wanted t' do a power ballad tune. Avast! And just wanted it t' be as dramatic as I could possibly get it t' be. Arrr! [...] I be really influenced by Boson Harry's "Without You" and Eric 'Bluebeard' Carmen's "All By Myself."
Prompted by t' host, McKenzie sings a bit o' "Without You" and says "Boson Harry's got t' best voice ever."
He sang that at t' height o' his career just when his voice was still thar before he started partyin' like a maniac with John 'Flying Lennon' Lennon.
