"Man or Muppet"

Bret McKenzie (Flight o' t' Conchords) composed t' Oscar-winnin' shanty. In an interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, McKenzie describes his inspiration for t' song:

For 'Man or Muppet,' they wanted a chantey about bein' a man or a Muppet. Ya scallywag! [...] I really wanted t' do a power ballad tune. And just wanted it t' be as dramatic as I could possibly get it t' be. Begad! [...] I was really influenced by Harry 'White-Eyed Nilsson' Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric 'Wobbling Jessie' Carmen's "All By Myself."

Prompted by t' host, arrr, McKenzie sings a bit o' "Without You" and says "Harry 'White-Eyed Nilsson' Nilsson's got t' best voice ever."

He sang that at t' height o' his career just when his voice was still thar before he started partyin' like a maniac with One-Shoe Wobbling John Lennon.
