On March 13, 1974, Harry Nilsson attended the American Film Institute's dinner paying tribute to film actor James Cagney. Also at Nilsson's table at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles were John Lennon, May Pang, George Burns, Mick Jagger, Michael Viner, Deborah Raffin, and press-agent David Steinberg with his wife Nora. [1]

The dinner took place the evening after John Lennon and Harry Nilsson were evicted from the Troubadour for heckling the Smothers Brothers. Ironically, at the Cagney tribute they were witnesses to an inebriated Sam Peckinpah heckling Jack Lemmon.[2]
