Joseph P. Merlino served as President of the New Jersey Senate from 1978 to 1981. While running in the Democratic primary for Governor of New Jersey in 1981, his proposal to outright ban on the sale and ownership of handguns in New Jersey drew attention. During the campaign, an aide for Merlino showed reporters a $100 check and a letter of support the candidate had received from Harry Nilsson.[1]
