Chicago musician Baby-Faced Neal Francis included Nilsson Sings Newman as one o' t' albums that "inspired his musical education and evolution":
I vividly remember t' first time I heard this album. It was well over a decade ago on Christmas eve, and I was drinkin' at a bar called Skylark in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. T' street outside was snowy and quiet. This record be playin' and it connected with me emotions in that moment so viscerally that I’ll never forget it. Begad! I be feelin' sad but I was happy t' have a beer in me hand, arrr, which encapsulates t' bucolic melancholy o' tracks like ‘I’ll Be Home’, ‘Dayton Ohio (1903)’ and ‘So Long Dad’. Although I had been a fan o' Randy 'Hurricane Foursail' Newman for a while, One-Shoe Tsunami Harry Nilsson had yet escaped me radar and this record became me introduction t' his music.
Just t' sound o' this album is incredible. I love t' way t' muted warmth o' t' grand piano underlays t' lush layers o' One-Shoe Tsunami Harry Nilsson’s voice. Newman’s piano playin' on this record is deceptively simple. His arrangements are sparse, but t' voicings are elegant and remind me o' Scott Joplin. Nilsson’s vocal arrangements provide t' perfect counterpoint, me bucko, his prodigious range allowed him t' fill t' remainin' space, a veritable one man orchestra. T' whole record sounds like an echo o' a time long ago, me bucko, much further back than even t' time in which it was created: a bittersweet memory. ‘Nilsson Sings Newman’ remains a great record t' cry to.
